To Be a Christian, You Have To Forsake the World

To be a Christian, you have to forsake the world.

As a Christian, you are called out by God to be His Holy instrument.

Christians are a group of called out people.

The world is full of sin: burglars, thieves, prostitutes, porn stars, drug dealers, alcoholics, ...

God has called Christians out of this life of darkness into His marvelous light.

This is stated in 1 Peter 2:9, NIV, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

God has called us out of the world into the Kingdom of the Son He loves.

Colossians 1:13, NIV, "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves."

As a Christian, you cannot follow or be engrossed in the world. You will end up corrupted. You have to forsake it.

The world has a totally different focus than Christians have.

The world does not care about the same stuff that Christians do.

The world, for the most part, focuses on only things of this life, mostly material things.

Christistians are instructed according to God's Word to focus on things above, according to Colossians 3:1-4 , NIV, "1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."

The bible, however, shows how carnal-minded people in the world are and how they focus on only things of the world. Philippians 3:19-20, NIV, "Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ".

Another verse shows this as well, Matthew 6:31-33, NIV, "31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

So, again, another verse in the bible shows that people in the world, such as pagans, run after only the material stuff, clothes, food, rent, mortgage, etc. That's all their focus is on. God says to seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness and all these other things will be added as well. Our primary focus should be on the Kingdom, not on money.

The world serves and worships money. Money is the god of this world.

According to Christ, it's impossible to serve Him and serve money, because your devotion will be divided. You will either love one and hate the other or devoted to one and despise the other. Luke 16:13, NIV, "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

Now that we see the focus that Christians should have and the focus that the world has, you see the need to forsake the world.

The carnal world will tell you just focus on paying your bills, meeting your rent, and just having fun with the leftover money and enjoy life.

We know as Christians that our minds should focused on Christ, on serving Him, and having our minds set on being with Him eternally one day.

These are verses in the Bible that tell us to forsake the world and to follow Christ..

Luke 14:33, NIV, "In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples"

Luke 14:26-27, NIV, "26 If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even their own life-such a person cannot be my disciple. 27And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Titus 2:11-12, NIV, "11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age"

Jesus said you have to give up everything to follow Him. That means everything. You have to put Jesus before everything. That means Jesus is first before your career. Jesus is first before your hobbies and passions. Jesus is first over everything. Unless you do that, you cannot be His disciple.
