LED strip is overheating

I have previously used a 9 volt battery to power a 12 volt LED strip with no problem other than short battery life, approx 2 hours. I started using a lithium/ion rechargeable 11.1 volt battery instead of the 9 volt to make it last longer and save the cost and waste of 9 volt batteries. The 9V battery was approx 500 mA/hour rating and the lithium/ion is 220 mA. Now the LED strip is getting burning hot and will literally melt the plastic reel it comes on. Why? I have to use some other battery besides 9V and have to find a way to make the rechargeable one work. Any suggestions?

So the LED Strip is meant to function on 12V and you're using a 11.1V battery and that's causing it to overheat? Maybe it's possible that an LED went bad and is creating a short circuit somewhere. Does the LED strip seem fine? What happens if you switch back to the original battery used before? Will it work again?
