If you ascribe to Christianity, you are almost surely aware of the denominations that exist wtihin Christianity.
There are no shortage of denomations, including pentecostal, methodist, baptist, seven day adventist, jehovah's witness, and the list goes on and on and on and on.
But is this God's will for Christianity?
Is this what God wanted?
Did God create all these different denomations and different churches?
Does God want Christians divided?
Let's see what the bible says.
Galatians 5:19-21 "19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."
Let's now look at the definition of the word, 'factions'.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, a faction is, "a group within a larger group, esp. one with slightly different ideas than the main group".
A Christian denomination, therefore, fits the perfect example of a faction within Christianity.
And the bible says that those who live like this will inherit the Kingdom of God .
Being in a faction (i.e., a denomation) is a sin.
If you are in a denomination, you are living divided. You are part of division. You represent division. You represent strife. You don't represent unity.
As Christians, we are called to be like God. We are called to be like Jesus.
Ephesians 5:1-2 "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children"
And let's see how the bible describes God.
God loves unity.
Psalm 133:1 " How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!"
John 17:20-23 " 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity."
Therefore, you see that God wants perfect unity among Christians.
God actually warns against divisions several times when addressing the churches in the New Testament.
Romans 16:17 " I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them."
1 Corinthians 1:10 " I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. "
1 Corinthians 12:24-26 " But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it."
So you can clearly see God hates division within the church.
Furthermore, in the bible, there is record that God only created one church. Today, there exists hundreds of different churches, because many divisive people have come in, contrary to God's Word, and created division, which created denominations (or factions). However, if you read the Scripture, as shown above, you can clearly see that God hates this. God loves unity among His church and wants the brotherhood unified. God did not create the hundreds of churches and denomations you see today. Divisive people have contrary to His Word.
So know that if you are in a denomation, you are in a faction and are part of the reason why Christianity today is divided. God says that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God. So come out of the division. Join a non-denominational church. The Church of Christ is a nondenominational church that was formed right after Christ's death in the Book of Acts in AD 33. God bless!
